Apple Releases Java Update
Being new to the world of Macs it's a bit frustrating to find myself lagging behind on Java updates. For those who don't know, Apple releases a Mac tailored version of Java for its operating system. So, while installation is a simple matter of letting the software update program do its thing, it also means that new Java versions are somewhat delayed.
Today the software update program proudly announced that I can install Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2. Which means the version of Java I can now run is compatible with version 1.6.0_07, released by Sun about three months ago. Sadly that's only good news if you're running a 64-bit Intel processor. If not, it seems you're left a bit high and dry.
However, I did a bit of scouting around and found an independent version of Java SE 6 that supports 32-bit machines. It looks like they're working on a version for the latest release as well.
